Welcome to VALA2014

VALA2014 is streaming with possibilities.  The 17th Biennial Conference and Exhibition is the must-attend event for specialists, managers and leading edge thinkers working in information and technology in the GLAM sectors.  It is expected to attract 1,500 participants to Melbourne from 3-6 February 2014.

Invitation from the Conference Committee

On behalf of the VALA2014 Conference Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend VALA’s 17th Biennial Conference, the leading library technology conference and exhibition in our region.

Returning to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, VALA2014 sets the stage for innovation; promoting the use and understanding of cutting edge information and communication technologies across libraries, galleries, museums and archives.

In the Call for Papers we asked: what are the possibilities in the data stream?

Our vision is of a future where networks enable almost instant access to digital resources, a world where technology better facilitates business, collaboration, research and learning.  In this future filled with big data and big ideas, our cultural institutions have already begun the transformation into places rich in creativity and imagination, where makers, hackers, gamers, crafters and readers are all welcome.

I’ve been actively involved with VALA since 2004 and stay involved because the conference continues to ignite curiosity, challenge people and share stories of not only successes but also failures – where people dare to take risks. I learn so much from the shared experiences of the speakers and the participants.

At VALA2014, expect to be inspired by our outstanding International keynote speakers, our diverse and expert presenters, and open your mind to new ideas and possibilities.

Keynote Speakers

Our popular L-Plate Series returns to guide you through the jargon and, for the technically minded, the VALAtech Boot Camp sessions provide intensive hands-on-learning workshop style.

Invest time in our 3-day exhibition and meet the leading providers and suppliers in our industry. Discover new solutions, rekindle old networks and create new partnerships. The Network Hub will be one of the main meeting places, a central commons in the middle of the exhibition hall; and the SAGE Red Carpet area will host launches and gatherings – and perhaps a flash mob!

I also invite you to come along to the prestigious Robert D. Williamson Award and Conference Dinner, presented for the first time in The Great Hall of Melbourne’s fabulous National Gallery of Victoria where I will yet again try to be the first on the dance floor!

Join me at VALA2014 and dare to envisage a world streaming with possibilities.
