An investigation of the information needs and the potential for electronic delivery of library services to remote postgraduate distance education students was conducted by UCQ library in 1992. The project involved a national survey of remote postgraduate distance education students, and a trial of electronic delivery of services over eleven weeks to a group of these students. This trial included the use of email, dial-up access to the library catalogue, dial-up access to CD-ROM databases, electronic delivery of library material to email addresses, and the introduction of AARNet to students. The investigation showed that electronic library services have the potential to improve the access to information for the remote student, by giving them access to specialist library services, and enabling them to conduct their library research regardless of their location.
