Abstract

Monash University Library (MUL) subscribes to approximately 200 electronic databases covering the full range of disciplines taught and researched at Monash University. A survey of users of these databases was conducted during March and April, 2001. The aim of the survey was to gain an understanding about the ways that users discover and select databases and the experiences they have when using these resources.

Feedback from users was predominantly focussed on the following issues: the need for quicker and simpler links to the many and varied databases; the difficulty of selecting relevant databases; improved search interfaces; better and more immediate online help; fewer technical problems and a reduction in password checks

Abstract

During 2003 Monash University Library engaged in a major redesign of the library databases web site. The basis of this was a program which used MARC records from Monash’s Endeavour Voyager catalogue to generate online electronic journal subject lists. The new databases page was intended to make for easier updating, and to allow us to respond to known user issues. In theory this was straightforward. In practice a number of issues were raised. The paper looks at how Monash resolved these issues, while commenting on the relationship between metadata and technology. Some future directions will also be discussed.

Abstract

From 2008-2010, the State Library of Victoria has implemented five enterprise-wide library systems as part of the SLV21 project planning framework. A considerable amount of time and effort has been put into working with data flow across these different systems to ensure that staff workflows and data use and re-use is properly managed. This paper will cover a range of data modelling and planning that has been necessary to work with each system. Some best practice methods are discussed and outcomes and recommendations put forward.

Abstract

During 2004, Monash University Library undertook a usability study of its library catalogue. A number of things were tested including terminology, search behaviour, search types, users’ ability to deal with mixed results, preferred interface and layout, including selection and formatting of records, as well as tasks to do with lending and requesting of items. Methodology and outcomes are discussed in the paper, as well as information relating to programs and documents used in the study.
