Abstract

In July 2001 UNSW Library went to tender for new library systems. UNSW Library was looking for not just a traditional Integrated Library Management System, but a set of systems and tools that would enable the Library to best meet the needs and requirements it saw critical for the rapidly changing scholarly information environment of the 21st century. Sirius is the name given to this new tool, the ExLibris Metalib and SFX applications. This paper describes the philosophy, aims and implementation issues behind what the Library sees as the key tool/system in providing seamless integrated access to print and digital resources within a resource discovery and portal environment.

Abstract

For the past eighteen months, the eResearch Lab at the University of Queensland has been working with the Australian Literature community on the Aus-e-Lit project. Aus-e-Lit is a cross-disciplinary collaboration that is developing eResearch tools for scholars of Australian literature who are members of the AustLit consortium. The AustLit Web portal provides access to a comprehensive bibliographic and full-text collection that is considered the peak resource for scholars of Australian literary heritage. The portal also provides a mechanism for the dissemination and deployment of the eResearch services that we have developed and that are described in this paper. These include: text processing services, federated search services, annotation services, compound object authoring tools and advanced visualisation services.

In 2004, the Library implemented VDX software to manage all interlending and document delivery requests. ZPortal, the web based customer interface, provides request management and desktop delivery of documents. This paper describes the experience of developing online tutorials, in response to the need to provide a simple training solution for all end users in the use of this new system.
