Abstract

One possible model for libraries that are investigating the introduction of eBooks, is the digital distribution of eBooks through library and library users computers, via Internet connection. This paper explores the various models that can be adopted to implement the on-line distribution of eBooks. Issues discussed include content availability, content suitability and benefits to library users of on-line eBooks. Models considered include the established netLibrary and the emerging ebrary. A brief comment on the likely time frame to introduce on-line eBooks models is also included.

Abstract

Yarra Plenty Regional Library (YPRL), with its partner organisations the City of Whittlesea and Whittlesea University of the Third Age (U3A), has been funded to establish a Digital Hub at the Mill Park Branch Library in South Morang, to provide residents with training in the digital literacy skills necessary for participation in the National Broadband Network (NBN)-enabled digital economy. This paper presents results from a research project designed to explore the impact of the Mill Park Digital Hub in its first year of operation, focusing on the role of public libraries in both engaging and educating local communities.

Abstract

The inception of the Internet and Augmented Reality (AR) technology has instituted a cultural and cognitive shift in Western society. Innovations such as Google’s search algorithm and Apple’s integrated voice search assistant Siri are rapidly becoming the librarians of the future. To stay relevant, libraries need to identify the key needs of the community and develop a targeted service that answers those needs. The progressions that threaten the library’s existence are the key to its evolution. AR applications can be interpreted to increase the library’s reach and engage an increasingly disassociated community.

Abstract

Whilst most of the systems and products libraries used in our daily work can and do produce a wealth of measurement detail, the problem that persists is “what does this all mean?” What we want is information. What we get is data. This presentation will show how Yarra Plenty Regional Library achieves that transformation: data into information. Using real data, you will see the tools that have been developed to give YPRL management insights into many aspects of the services provided by a modern public library. From collection management to WiFi usage, from public PC utilisation to door counts, eight different aspects of public library services will be discussed.

Abstract

In October 2006, Yarra Plenty Library participated in the online learning program Learning 2.0, designed to introduce participants to the world of Web 2.0. Our journey since the instigation of this program has led us to new ways of delivering services to our community. This paper will outline the concept behind the Learning 2.0 Program, look at the Library Worker 2.0 follow-up training modules and the applications in which staff now use Web 2.0 technologies to provide new interactive services and programs for our community. It also outlines how we have shared our experiences with the wider library community.
