Abstract

Nowadays, technology plays a significant part in the delivery of library programs and services. For some libraries, the use of technology is commonplace, finding innovative ways to incorporate technology, leading the way in enhancing user experience. Others, however, struggle to find a way to incorporate technology into new or existing programs and services, facing barriers such as costs, resources and staff knowledge.  This session will work as part presentation, part workshop with the expectation that attendees will participate in the majority of the session, with discussion and feedback. The session will comprise three parts.

Abstract

The inception of the Internet and Augmented Reality (AR) technology has instituted a cultural and cognitive shift in Western society. Innovations such as Google’s search algorithm and Apple’s integrated voice search assistant Siri are rapidly becoming the librarians of the future. To stay relevant, libraries need to identify the key needs of the community and develop a targeted service that answers those needs. The progressions that threaten the library’s existence are the key to its evolution. AR applications can be interpreted to increase the library’s reach and engage an increasingly disassociated community.
