Abstract

E-learning, now established as a permanent feature in the teaching landscape, has created long term effects for information professionals. As educational institutions grapple with developing new models of support for this new and growing group of students, so too do information professionals. To enable informed decisions, prepare library services and ensure appropriate support for teaching staff and students, information professionals need to have pertinent information in e-learning. To this end, the presenters of this paper visited libraries overseas to investigate the relationship of the new players within the electronic environment, the needs of the students and the role of the information professionals.

Abstract

When the Information Commons at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE introduced a Live Help reference service in January 2002, it became the first Victorian TAFE to develop a synchronous online reference service. Email reference had been introduced earlier with little success but this did not discourage management; rather it confirmed the need to embrace a new technology that today’s Internet savvy students are familiar with. Email and telephone reference are still available, but the success of Live Help has proven that a virtual reference service can be developed at a TAFE level. This paper will discuss the experience of setting up a digital reference service; the aim is to put this work into an historical context and to show that you don’t need enormous budgets or extra staff in order to successfully implement such a service.

Abstract

Holmesglen TAFE has developed an online Information Literacy tutorial in collaboration with the E-learning Unit. The paper explores the challenges faced as librarians worked with multimedia experts and the attempts to reconcile the expectations and aims of the two groups. Understanding the new pedagogy and tools required to successfully produce a dynamic tutorial, that gives similar depth to face-to-face tutorials, that content was comprehensive to cover Information Literacy standards, language appropriate for the target audience and information generic enough to deal with a variety of databases and interface also created challenges for the librarians. The result is Know it All!
