Abstract

This paper discusses the implementation of Alma by Ex Libris at the RMIT University Library in Melbourne, Australia. Alma is a cloud-based library services platform that rewrites the design of client-based library management systems, which until recently have been prevalent in technical services. Moving into the cloud has presented challenges, new opportunities for innovation and a vision for the future of library data. This paper considers these challenges and innovations and their impact on workflows and staff skill sets now and in the future.

Abstract

The SWIFT Initiative is a proposal for Victorian public libraries to collaboratively share the operation of one library management system to achieve improved service outcomes for library users plus operational and cost benefits for the participating libraries. It is envisaged that over time all Victorian public libraries would participate. This paper is about two aspects of the SWIFT Initiative. The paper covers the underlying reasons that prompted consideration for the proposed project and an overview of the business case prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Through substantiation of the validity of the proposal, the business case was intended to persuade libraries and Councils of the merits of the project and to participate and for the Victorian State Government to provide a special funding grant to assist with the initial establishment costs of the collaborative venture.

VALA2010 L-Plate Session 1 Open Source Library Systems

VALA L PlateMonday 8 February, 13:00 – 13:30

Integrated Library Management Systems (ILMS) that use open source software have been used for at least 10 years. However, with the rapid uptake of open source software across numerous industry sectors in recent time, more and more libraries are considering open source ILMS as an alternative to proprietary systems. This presentation looks at open source ILMS, how they differ from proprietary systems, and what libraries need to consider when looking to implement an open source ILMS.

Presenter: Kathryn Greenhill

Kathryn Greenhill is a well known and respected commentator within the Australian library community. Amoung other things, Kathryn is pasionately interested in the community building capacity of libraries (especially through new technologies), how Web2.0 will change library culture (and the best way to make this a smooth transition), emergent technology training in libraries, and open source.

VALA Travel ScholarKathryn is also the VALA2008 travel scholar As a VALA Travel Scholar Kathryn travelled to the United States and Canada in order to study Alternative Discovery Layers and Open Source Library Management Systems. VALA is therefore delighted Kathryn enthusiastically agreed to introduce the topic of Open Source Library Management Systems to the VALA2010 L Plate Series.
