VALA invites you to our first Guest Speaker event for 2016. This 1-hour event will be run as a Zoom Webinar.
Join special Guest Speakers Nobuko Miyairi and Alainna Wrigley from ORCID for a basic technical introduction to ORCID APIs.
Following on from their successful VALA2016 BootCamp, the team from ORCID Asia Pacific joins us to deliver a practical, hands-on session to help you understand how to use the ORCID Member and Public APIs.
Speakers: Nobuko Miyairi, Regional Director, Asia Pacific, ORCID
Nobuko builds relationships with stakeholders across Asia Pacific to expand ORCID adoption and awareness in the research community. Prior to joining ORCID, Nobuko held positions at Thomson Reuters and Nature Publishing Group, where she worked closely with research organizations, government policy makers and funding bodies to provide research management solutions. A librarian by training, Nobuko earned an MLIS from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and brings an extensive working knowledge in needs-based consultancy and information management.
and Alainna Wrigley, Community Engagement and Support, Asia Pacific, ORCID
Alainna supports members in the Asia Pacific region as they integrate the ORCID registry into their research workflows. She has held various roles in academic, non-profit, and commercial legal environments in the greater China region. An infrequent translator whose work has been exhibited at the Nobel Museum, Alainna speaks English, Mandarin, French, and Japanese and reads others in addition.
Topic: “Getting connected with the ORCID APIs”
ORCID (an abbreviation of Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an open, non-profit, community-driven effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID provides two core functions: (1) a registry to obtain a unique identifier and manage a record of activities, and (2) APIs that support system-to-system communication and authentication. This session will focus primarily on the ORCID APIs.
The ORCID APIs specify how an outside program can interact with the ORCID registry to retrieve and update the registry’s data. We will provide a technical overview of using the ORCID Member and Public APIs. After a brief introduction to ORCID and how to encourage your researchers to get and use an ORCID iD, we will give an overview of the ORCID Public and Member APIs, how your system can integrate with them, and what can be done on them. We will discuss how your systems can help researchers create new ORCID iDs or link existing iDs to your system while also obtaining their permission to read or edit their ORCID records using the ORCID APIs. We will also demonstrate how to use those permissions to edit an ORCID record. Finally, we will circulate a self-enrichment exercise to give you hands-on experience creating and editing your own ORCID record using our ORCID API testing server.
Q&A: Questions are welcome throughout the session.
