Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has supercharged an accelerated leap into online learning in universities. This has shone a global spotlight onto open educational resources (OER) as a paradigm for new models of learning. These approaches are tackling contemporary challenges in higher education like inequity and inflexible legacy models of pedagogy.

This paper and presentation will focus on how La Trobe University Library has confronted these challenges since 2016 by establishing a bold early adopter program for a Library as Open Knowledge Creator service called the La Trobe eBureau.

The eBureau model is scaffolded around a principle of “La Trobe authors for La Trobe courses”, where open textbooks and educational resources are developed and published to tackle local pedagogical challenges, but are made openly available to the global community for adoption, reuse, and collaboration. The eBureau platform provides an array of services including features such as:

• author consultation support
• double peer review
• copyright reviewing and advice
• structural and copy editing
• visual design and identity kits
• sourcing multimedia
• minting DOIs and ISBNs
• discoverability via indexing in open repositories, discovery layers, National Library indexes, etc
• marketing and promotion
• book launch events

The main aim of this paper will be to reflect on five years of learning to be an OER publisher – and particularly to share lessons learnt about the barriers, solutions, lessons learnt from engaging in this ambitious project. It will conclude with recommendations for colleagues aiming to pursue similar directions, and future steps to advance Australian OER creation in academic libraries.

Abstract

Changing conditions require changing business practices. Academic libraries are not an exception. Current trends require libraries to work more efficiently and in a more agile fashion. Library management systems can facilitate agility and efficiency by providing an open platform that enables integration and extension. A model based on apps takes an open platform to the next level, enabling libraries to develop and deploy apps that reside inside the library system, and enables users to easily activate, access, and use the apps as a part of their daily workflows.

Biography

Itai Veltzman leads the cross products and innovation group in the Library Solutions business unit at Ex Libris. Itai’s main responsibilities are to promote new services and infrastructure in the areas of Linked Open Data, Openness, Analytics, User Experience, Security and Privacy. He strongly believe in true user-centric collaboration and partnership with our customers community. Itai also believes it is all about the data, how you manage it and how you present it. He is looking forward to learn and develop his expertise in libraries management systems, especially linked open data.

Abstract

The biggest organisational change in La Trobe University’s history provided an opportunity for the University Library not only to review its operating model and staffing structure, but also to identify the roles required now and into the future. As part of the review, the Library assessed the capabilities and skills of its staff, created opportunities for strengthening these, and identified new capabilities and skills to meet emerging priorities in the Library and the University. This paper outlines key aspects of these processes that have resulted in the development of a new workplace culture, which explicitly aligns capability, services and partnerships with the University’s strategic objectives.

Abstract

University libraries are no longer only the domain of librarians, students and scholars. As collections have moved online, libraries have created more collaborative working spaces for students, and incorporated other enquiry services such as IT or academic skills assistance. In 2015, La Trobe University went one step further and integrated Student Administration services to extend the student help portfolio via single physical and virtual service points. As part of a total University and Library restructure, a new service model was created in the Library, incorporating six specialist help areas: Library, Student Administration, Course Advisors, IT, Careers, and Academic Skills.

Abstract

This paper based on a study visit made in May 1999, generously sponsored by the VALA Travel Scholarship program, reports on developmental projects that seek to aid library users to efficiently discover and locate information resources. In the current information landscape, where resources exist in a variety of formats, the goal is to develop systems that seamlessly integrate the globally distributed content. The report includes descriptions of the most promising UK eLib program funded research projects into Hybrid Library Systems and some of the Digital Library Initiatives in USA Universities. It also identifies and provides links to other international research on creating Digital Library Systems.

Abstract

Since 1995 the La Trobe University Library has been building upon the infrastructure and experience provided by a National Priority (Reserve) Fund Grant for the Library Image Database Project. Quite independently Dr. Richard Cosgrove, La Trobe University Department of Archaeology, gained a 1996 C.A.U.T. grant to develop a text and CD-ROM for teaching skills in faunal analysis. This paper discusses the intentions and outcomes of these projects and how advances have been achieved as a collaborative approach has developed into a working model for building multimedia Web resources for research and learning.

Abstract

La Trobe University Library provides interlending and document delivery services to academic staff and postgraduate students located in campuses and research centres in the Melbourne metropolitan area and regional Victoria, as well as remote off campus students throughout Australia, and off shore students predominantly in China and Vietnam. In 2004, the Library implemented VDX software to manage all interlending and document delivery requests. ZPortal, the web based customer interface, provides request management and desktop delivery of documents. This paper describes the experience of developing online tutorials, in response to the need to provide a simple training solution for all end users in the use of this new system.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a database to facilitate research into 19th century library management practices and borrower behaviour in Bendigo, Australia. The database schema was designed to reflect the cataloguing and numbering systems utilised in the library in the 1880’s. The schemes proved surprisingly versatile and effective in a database environment, and worked well to both illustrate and model the organisation of the library and to manage the data in a modern database.
