Biography

Marshall Breeding is an independent consultant, speaker, and author. He is the creator and editor of Library Technology Guides and the libraries.org online directory of libraries on the Web. His Systems Librarian column appears in Computers in Libraries; he is the Editor for Library Technology Newsletter, published through Library Technology Guides. From 2002 through 2021 he was the editor and contributor for Smart Libraries Newsletter published by the American Library Association, and has authored the annual Library Systems Report published in American Libraries since 2014 and in Library Journal from 2002-2013. He has authored fourteen issues of ALA’s Library Technology Reports, and has written many other articles and book chapters. Marshall has edited or authored eight books. He regularly teaches workshops and gives presentations at library conferences on a wide range of topics.

Abstract

Libraries depend on strategic library management and discovery technologies that power their work behind the scenes and patron-facing services. The industry that creates these strategic library technology products has seen profound changes in recent years through business dynamics such as horizontal and vertical consolidation. Mergers among the slate of companies developing library management systems now approach the limits of consolidation tolerable by the library economy. Beyond this type of consolidation, top-level companies offering a diverse portfolio of products and services to libraries have begun to expand their involvement with these strategic technologies, exploiting synergies possible among content, technology, and services.

Discovery layers is the term for the next generation of library portals with inbuilt federated search functionality, relevance ranking, and social web applications. With discovery layers metadata is no longer the only basis for discovery and libraries can include deep linking to content, enriched content, and graphic search navigation interfaces. As such discovery layers move beyond a focus on the traditional library management system and its content domain and instead focus on the broad range of components that constitute library collections

He regularly teaches workshops and gives presentations at library conferences on a wide range topics, throughout the United States and internationally. Abstract

Based on his ongoing research and analysis of the product, technology, and business trends of the library automation industry, Marshall Breeding will give his perspective on the current state of the field and what libraries can expect over the next few years. While some companies will continue a stable and evolutionary path, others articulate more dramatic changes in their strategies. Open source ILS options have already repainted the landscape, with new community source projects underway that promise additional change. The industry drives forward on two fronts, one focusing on automating internal library processes and the other providing new ways for users to discovery and access library collections. Major tech trends such as the rapid rise in smart mobile devices, the shift from local computing to platform-as-a-service cloud computing bring new mandates of change that demand new directions of innovation. These cycles all turn within an economic climate that presents great challenges in the levels of resources that libraries can bring to the table.
