Rachel Buchanan 200

VALA Guest Speaker Event and Annual General Meeting

Topic: “Inside the seed bank”

This talk considers the Germaine Greer Archive as a seed bank, a living collection of dormant material that preserves cultural, historical and political diversity. It explores how old and new technologies – arrangement and description, conservation, digitisation, social media and subject headings – can make archival records spring to life. Rachel Buchanan will use The Iran Album (1974), the telephone answering machine tape (1976) and the Ethiopia records (1984-85) as case studies of how this germination can work. These records illuminate the past but they are also emerging as powerful and playful actors in the present.
