VALA Guest Speaker Event and Annual General Meeting

Topic: “Web Driven Revolution for Library Data

The presentation slides can be viewed via this slideshare link.

Many believe that the web’s influence on libraries is limited to social networking interaction and the design of discovery interfaces. However, the way the web now handles metadata is driving fundamental changes in our world, changes that will revolutionize the processes that underpin metadata management, sharing, and cataloguing.

The symptoms have been visible for some time—linked data, web ad- dressable authority files, search engine knowledge graphs, BibFrame—but we are now starting to see the effects in moves toward the management of entities and away from cataloguing individual records.

Richard will explore the issues and describe the impacts and benefits for library resource visibility on the web, and internal library workflows.

wallis richardSpeaker: Richard Wallis, Technology Evangelist, OCLC

As Technology Evangelist* and Consultant, Richard Wallis is at the forefront in promoting, explaining, and applying new and emerging Web and Semantic Web technologies in the wider information domain. Richard is well known on the conference platform in the Semantic Web, Library, and Information Management sectors.

Richard joined OCLC as Technology Evangelist in 2012 as they develop their Linked Data strategy to place libraries at the core of the Web of Data.

*not to be confused with a televangelist (!), a technology evangelist is a person who builds a critical mass of support for a given technology, and then establishes it as a technical standard in a market that is subject to network effects.

Please join Richard, the VALA Committee, members and guests for this very special VALA Guest Speaker Event, at 5.30pm, Wednesday 1 July 2015.

Please note the different venue at the Docklands Library.

This talk will follow the business of the Annual General Meeting. VALA members will be advised separately regarding the AGM.
