VALA invites you to our August Guest Speaker event for 2016. This 1-hour event will be run as a Zoom Webinar.
Join special Guest Speakers David Feighan and Ebe Kartus who will be speaking on the topic “Collaborative metadata management in cloud based library systems – what are some of the practical implications”.
Focusing on Alma from Ex Libris and WorldShare from OCLC, this webinar will explore the opportunities and challenges the new sharing environment brings. We will be talking about what the new environment means for modification of shared records and who can do this, who owns and controls the metadata especially as some of the larger players manage and maintain the largest buckets of metadata. What are some of the ramifications in the Australian environment and how does the path chosen by New Zealand potentially affect what we do.
Topic: “Collaborative metadata management in cloud based library systems”
In recent times more libraries are moving to online cloud based library catalogue and management platforms that enables these libraries to work off a shared bibliographic record. As a result there are different workflows and new things to think about when compared to the traditional approach of uploading catalogue records into a standalone siloed systems that may also include batch exporting holdings to national metadata infrastructure such as Libraries Australia, Te Puna and Education Services Australia’s SCIS. This national infrastructure is changing as well with the move of Te Puna to Worldshare. Some of the points to think about are: What does this mean for who owns, controls, and can modify library metadata especially as some of the larger players manage and maintain the largest buckets of metadata? How should these large global metadata buckets of bibliographic metadata be cross referenced and do Australian libraries need to think about the ramifications of this in more detail. What are the protocols around syncing these large metadata buckets? What are the considerations around a library enhancing metadata into a shared record for the other libraries that rely on that record? Plus more questions.
Core Content: Cooperative and collaborative cataloguing using the new semantic web technologies and the road blocks.
The Future: Finding ways were we can better use the new technologies to move ‘back to the future’ for cooperative metadata creation.
Who Should Attend?: Anyone interested in resource description and how the new environment is affecting what we do.
Q&A: Questions are welcome throughout the session.
