Question: What does a truly contemporary library service look like?
The next VALA webinar “Open Innovation”, is a timely exploration of how GLAM institutions are collaborating to create new service offerings. It was sparked by recent announcements regarding the State Library Victoria’s StartSpace and Foundry658 initiatives, and fuelled by the interesting parallels we’ve observed with the State Library of Queensland’s The Edge.
Each of these projects is a response to the challenge of providing a contemporary library experience, with collaboration between GLAM institutions a key to success.
Our guest speakers, Anna Burkey from SLV and Andrei Maberley from SLQ, will share the ups and downs of the journey so far, what it means to work in an openly collaborative environment and what they might do differently if they had their time over.
Guest Speakers:
Anna Burkey, State Library Victoria
Anna Burkey is a cultural leader in the overlapping worlds of knowledge & learning, storytelling and community. She brings teams together to start up new multi-disciplinary programs that make people smile, then get involved.
She has been described by CEOs and Boards she’s worked with as resourceful, inspiring and driven. With an international career path demonstrating commitment to strategic, audience-focused engagement; she believes that bringing creative people together around a clear vision makes for success. A mix of big ideals and a pragmatic approach, she’s a problem-solver at heart.
Her current challenge is StartSpace, a new centre for early-stage entrepreneurs at State Library Victoria.
Andrei Maberley, State Library Queensland
Andrei Maberley is a Program Officer at The Edge, State Library of Queensland. As part of programming team he develops and delivers workshops in The Edge’s Fabrication Lab and is at the helm of the Creative Community Computing and SLQ Wiki projects. Andrei ensures that programs developed at The Edge aren’t confined to the South Bank building by sharing precious knowledge through the delivery of public workshops and professional development programs around Queensland, and is a passionate advocate for equitable and open access to State Library resources.

Melissa Parent is Metadata Coordinator at the State Library Victoria. Melissa takes a keen interest in library data and systems (particularly next-generation library systems) and is a member of the Australian Committee on Cataloguing. She also currently holds the role of Australian representative on the Dewey Decimal Editorial Policy Committee.
