Abstract

Supporting Research Excellence and Impact is a key operational priority for the University of Adelaide Library and in 2022 our Library joined other Australian universities in subscribing to Read and Publish agreements with key publishers. These agreements provide read access but also open access publishing without charge to authors, in specific open access journals. The nature of this new initiative required our research community to navigate comprehensive webpages and multiple lists to determine if publishing open access in a journal was covered by an agreement. This was identified as a constant bottleneck and pain point for our users with feedback indicating the process was difficult and time consuming. Concurrently, our Research and Engagement team received increasing numbers of strategic publishing queries, where researchers sought assistance on determining the quartile ranking of scholarly journals. Drawing on in-house technical expertise and led by our guiding principles of being user centred and digital first, the Library developed an innovative solution in the form of a strategic publishing selection tool for researcher use. This paper will explore the rationale, development, promotion, and enhancement of the tool from a user centred and technical perspective.
