Abstract

We created a different way of visualising the way academic papers cite each other. Through assembling open access metadata to a custom web renderer for our visualisation, we are mapping the connections between academic papers to encourage exploration. We believe the human intelligence embedded in academic papers combined is a treasure trove of hidden gems that can be discovered, rather than artificial intelligence alone. This mapping approach enables serendipitous discovery and has connected researchers with un-discovered work. As a tool now being adopted by graduate students, our approach changed radically from a map of all science, to user driven maps for specific areas of research. Come along to this session to hear about the behind the scenes and our journey at Litmaps. We’ll talk about design problems and how we solved them, as well as avenues taken that turned out to be dead-ends.
